How we evaluate

Review Methodology

A practical overview of how StaySecureHub assesses security and privacy tools before publishing recommendations.

General approach

We combine hands-on product use, published documentation, independent audits where available, and comparison against relevant alternatives. Our goal is actionable guidance — not exhaustive lab testing of every feature in every environment.

Individual reviews (such as our NordVPN review or Incogni review) follow the category criteria below. Editorial standards and affiliate transparency are described in our editorial policy.

How we score products

Reviews use a 0–10 scoring scale across category-relevant criteria such as protection, privacy, performance, features, ease of use, support, and value. Each criterion reflects what matters most for that product type — for example, connection speed weighs more heavily in VPN reviews than in password manager reviews.

Scores are assigned based on:

  • Hands-on testing in everyday scenarios on common devices and networks
  • Comparison against leading alternatives in the same category
  • Published security documentation, privacy policies, and third-party audit reports where available
  • Real-world usability — setup friction, app quality, and support responsiveness

Detailed score breakdowns appear on individual review pages. Scores are editorial judgments, not laboratory certifications.

Rankings and top picks

Category hub pages and “best of” lists rank products using the same review scores and methodology described above. Order reflects our assessment of overall value for typical users — not payment from vendors.

When two products score closely, we explain trade-offs in the review or comparison rather than relying on a single decimal point. Browse current rankings on our VPN, antivirus, password manager, and privacy tools hubs, or see all reviews and comparisons.

VPN reviews

When evaluating VPN services, we typically consider criteria used across our VPN hub and comparison pages:

  • Encryption standards, leak protection, and kill switch behaviour in everyday use
  • Privacy policy, logging claims, and independent audit history where published
  • Connection stability, speed in common scenarios, and app usability across devices
  • Streaming and travel use cases when relevant to the product positioning
  • Pricing, plan limits, and value relative to comparable VPNs

Password manager reviews

For password managers, we focus on criteria reflected in our password manager hub:

  • Encryption architecture, zero-knowledge claims, and account recovery options
  • Autofill reliability, passkey support, and cross-platform sync
  • Sharing, breach monitoring, and family or business features when offered
  • Ease of setup for non-technical users and quality of official documentation
  • Price tiers and limits compared with leading alternatives

Privacy tools

Privacy-focused services — such as data removal tools — are assessed using criteria from our privacy tools hub:

  • Scope of data brokers and sites covered, based on published lists and user-visible results
  • Removal request process, reporting clarity, and ongoing monitoring where available
  • Privacy policy, data handling, and transparency about limitations
  • Support responsiveness and realistic expectations for removal timelines
  • Cost relative to manual opt-out effort and competing services

Antivirus reviews

Antivirus and security suite evaluations emphasise criteria used on our antivirus hub:

  • Core malware protection reputation and published third-party test results where available
  • System impact, scan speed, and false-positive behaviour in normal use
  • Included extras — firewall, VPN bundles, identity monitoring — and whether they add real value
  • Privacy policy and data collection practices for cloud-assisted features
  • Licensing, renewal pricing, and clarity of plan differences

Limitations

No single review can cover every device, network, or threat scenario. We update content when products change, but you should verify current pricing and features on official sites before purchasing. See our editorial policy for independence, fact-checking, and correction practices.
